Some of the best custom projects are born out of necessity. When a coveted shoe is obscenely limited, available in a few select countries, or only made in specific sizes, it can push a customizer to take things into their own hands. Exhibit A, the Nike Air Hateya 1.
The Native American word “Hateya” translates to “footprint in the sand”. Japanese brand Visvim has made a huge impression on the footwear industry with their moccasin styled toe detailing and tasseled ankle shroud designs. With the Visvim FBT not being available in a size 13, and in an attempt to make his own footprint in the custom industry, Dank Customs has stepped into the realm of reconstruction armed only with some scrap suede and a vision.
What began as a pair of Air Max 1 Essentials, was deconstructed, and rebuilt by hand. Taking cues from famed customizer Nash Money known for his moccasin toed aesthetic, the green toe was whip stitched to the sand colored one piece vamp/tongue. The side panels were replaced by the same sand colored suede, and left swoosh-less for a cleaner look. The shoe is tied together (literally and figuratively) by the removable ankle shroud. Leather cord laces add the finishing touch.
