After a couple teasers were shown on his Instagram yesterday Mache Customs has let the customized Air Mag out of the bag. As a customer commission by Cortland Finnegan, cornerback for the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League Mache was given the task of customizing the most expensive base shoe of all time. If you’ve been under a rock, Nike released 1500 pairs of the Air Mag just over a year ago via eBay with 100% of the proceeds going to Parkinson’s Disease research by the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Each pair sold for thousands of dollars, even up to $37000. One year later the Mags have been given their first new custom look.
Yesterdays #CKIP of this Nike Mag by Mache was seen covered in masking tape ready for painting. A look at the previously all gray upper shows a hazy black fade amongst graphics of turquoise and a magenta purple tubing. Any fan of the Back to the Future trilogy will recognize those as the lighting seen lining the Doc’s Delorean time machine. The most interesting detail though is the square and Y shape seen painted on the medial side of the left Mag to represent the “flux capacitor”, the Deloreans core component of time travel. Finally across the toe of the right shoe was painted the DMC logo of the Delorean Motor Company. Just given the base being the Air Mag not many customizers would have tried to pull off customizing this pair of sneaks. What could their nickname be….”Flux Capacitors”, “Time Travelers”, “Deloreans”…?
